Helena Imaging Center uses DEXA technology, that being dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Our Hologic dual photon bone densitometer is state-of-the-art and the only one in Helena offering 2-axis supine measurement and imaging. The imaging is termed morphometry.
The routine 2-axis spine imaging including both AP and lateral views more accurately estimates the risk of fractures as it excludes arthritic changes in the facets which is particularly pertinent in any patients after age 35. Additional available measurements include 2-point measurements of the hips including femoral neck fracture risk assessment and radial bone density measurement. DEXA scanning is performed at a very low dose, being lower than the dose for mammography and amounting to 5 days of background radiation. DEXA scanning is accurate and reproducible, allowing evaluation of fracture risk and the effectiveness of treatment over time can be evaluated as it is extremely sensitive and accurate for changes in bone density.
